The special school area currently comprises over 650 employees. The area includes all of the agency's regional and national special schools, ten in total from Umeå to Lund. In addition to the schools, the area also includes a school operations unit, a quality and administrative unit, and a central student health unit.

The school operations unit is responsible for coordinating support staff for our special schools as well as sign language interpreting and currently has about 10 employees. Other areas within SPSM also receive support in sign language interpreting.

Since the agency operates in large parts of the country, we use digital platforms for work and meetings remotely.

Are you a highly skilled sign language interpreter? Are you a practitioner with a theoretical foundation? Are you confident in your professional role?

We are looking for an additional sign language interpreter to be placed at Birgittaskolan in Örebro. Birgittaskolan is a bilingual special school in a sign language environment where sign language is the common language among both students and staff. You will be part of Birgittaskolan's and SPSM's team of interpreters who collectively contribute to the development of the interpreting service.

Our mission is to provide deaf students and students with hearing impairments an education equivalent to that offered in primary school/adapted primary school, according to the special school's curriculum. Birgittaskolan has approximately 150 students and is a multicultural school with students from various countries and cultures. We communicate in Swedish sign language as well as spoken and written Swedish. We also conduct sign language courses for hearing children and youth whose parents are deaf or have a hearing impairment.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

As a sign language interpreter for Birgittaskolan's operations, your work will include interpreting for both students and staff in various situations. For students, this may involve lessons, development discussions, study visits, and cultural events. Interpretation also occurs during breaks, in after-school activities, in student council work, and during joint activities. For staff, it may involve teaching, meetings, conferences, and professional development. Providing information to students and staff on how to use an interpreter is also included. Some administrative work may also occur.

QUALIFICATIONS

We are looking for someone who has;

Education;

  • Completed interpreting education as prescribed by the Institute of Interpreting and Translation with satisfactory results or is authorized by the Swedish Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency.

Work experience;

  • At least two years of recent experience working as a sign language interpreter.
  • Experience as a deafblind interpreter.

It is advantageous if you have;

  • Further education in the interpreting field.
  • Experience interpreting in school-related situations and in situations with children and youth.
  • Experience with pedagogical language use.
  • Experience with formal language use.
  • Experience interpreting remotely via digital platforms such as Zoom.
  • Experience with administrative support systems and other digital tools.

OTHER

A probationary period of 6 months will apply.

A criminal background check must be presented prior to employment.
